Description
What is a Hydrogen Fuel Cell?
A hydrogen fuel cell is an energy conversion device that transforms the chemical energy of hydrogen fuel directly into electrical energy through an electrochemical reaction. This process also generates heat and water (H₂O) as byproducts.
At the heart of the fuel cell is the single cell, which includes three key components:
-
Cathode (oxidizer electrode)
-
Anode (fuel electrode)
-
Electrolyte
During operation, oxidant gases (such as oxygen) are introduced at the cathode, while hydrogen fuel is supplied to the anode. The electrochemical reactions occur on opposite sides of the electrolyte membrane—oxidation at the anode and reduction at the cathode—producing a continuous flow of electricity.
Unlike conventional engines or turbines that rely on combustion and the heat engine cycle, fuel cells generate electricity directly from chemical energy. As a result, they are not constrained by the Carnot cycle, allowing for higher energy conversion efficiency.
Hydrogen fuel cells typically use pure or high-purity hydrogen, and their only emission is water—no harmful pollutants like sulfur oxides (SOx) or nitrogen oxides (NOx) are released. This makes them a clean and environmentally friendly energy source.
